Sir Geraint

Sir Geraint, sole survivor of Knight Commander Caradoc’s conroi, recounts Dunkerton: abandoned like Wells with food offerings; Caradoc burns it per Uther’s orders; a giant ambushes and slaughters the conroi; Geraint escapes but barely remembers how.

Abort the burn-orders

The Kenroi debates continuing the Summerland “swear or burn” orders:

  • Millicent wants to continue
  • Drustin/Liam/Geraint want to abort
  • Kenian decides to abort and head for Salisbury

The children of Shepton

At a crossroads they find 13 ragged children with the knights’ missing horses. When Liam claims his horse, a child replies: “But sir, he led me here.” They say they came from Shepton through the marshes. Brother Maynard volunteers to escort them to an abbey.

Sorceress swap at Woodhouse

At Woodhouse they show the prisoner cage — inside is Brother Maynard. The red sorceress has apparently switched places with him and escaped. The group fears she will use the children as agents against Salisbury.

Dead on the road

They find an overturned wagon with a partially eaten peasant family; Geraint judges the wounds were inflicted by men. They bury the dead.

Wolves near Vagon

They reach Vagon by night. Drustin insists on a shortcut deer-path toward Tisbury; Millicent/Liam/Geraint accompany him. Wolves ambush (pack of 5). Drustin and Liam are left near death; Millicent’s treatment and leadership gets them back to safety.

Peace of Summerland

Uther meets King Cadwy alone in a pavilion and emerges pale but with a signed treaty. Terms mostly restore prior peace, but Cadwy is granted new lands and the title Count of Somerset. Uther grants his ward Lady Ellen to Count Roderick in marriage.

With Aurelius dead and Uther not yet elected High King, the Kenroi are in a legal limbo: not formally Uther’s household knights and not sworn to Roderick (exception: Geraint is sworn to Roderick).

Rubies + ransom

Liam is furious Uther has not paid Eosa’s ransom and is legally owed one-third of Liam’s rubies.
