Summary

After the Glastonbury marsh discoveries, Sir Kenian’s enschild continues through Summerland enforcing Uther’s harsh “swear allegiance or be destroyed” orders—until they encounter a lone survivor.

Sir Geraint’s warning: Dunkerton

Sir Geraint is found battered and barely mounted. He reports Knight Commander Caradoc’s conroi went to Dunkerton and found the same signs as Wells: abandoned town and food offerings at doorways. Caradoc burns Dunkerton to the ground. During the burning, a Giant (Dunkerton) ambushes and slaughters the conroi; Geraint is the only survivor and can barely remember how he escaped.

The Kenroi debates whether to continue Uther’s destructive mission. Millicent favors continuing; Drustin, Liam, and Geraint argue to abort. Sir Kenian decides to withdraw and return toward Salisbury.

The children of Shepton

On the road to Woodhouse they meet 13 ragged children standing beside the knights’ missing mounts. When Liam demands his horse, a child replies: “But sir, he led me here.” The children say they fled from Shepton through the marshes. Brother Maynard volunteers to escort them to an abbey.

The disappearing sorceress

At Woodhouse, Sir Madoc is recovering from a manticore sting. When the knights present their captured red sorceress, the hood is removed to reveal Brother Maynard inside the cage. The knights conclude the red sorceress swapped places with him and escaped—and may now use the wandering children as agents.

Dead on the road

While pursuing the witch, they find an overturned wagon with a partially eaten peasant family. Geraint judges the wounds were inflicted by men, not beasts. They bury the dead.

Wolves in the forest

At Vagon, Drustin insists on a shortcut deer-path toward Tisbury (famed for healers). Against Kenian’s advice, Drustin, Liam, Millicent, and Geraint enter the woods and are ambushed by a pack of five wolves. Drustin and Liam are left near death; Millicent treats them and brings them safely back.

Peace of Summerland

A diplomatic summit follows: Uther meets King Cadwy of Summerland alone in a pavilion and emerges pale but with a signed treaty. Terms largely restore peace, but Cadwy is granted new lands and the title Count of Somerset. Uther also arranges a marriage alliance: his ward Lady Ellen of Winchbank will wed Count Roderick of Salisbury.

Knights without a lord

With Aurelius dead and Uther not yet elected High King, the Kenroi’s feudal status is legally strange: not formally Uther’s household knights and not sworn to Roderick (exception: Geraint is sworn to Roderick).

Rubies + ransom grievance

Liam remains furious Uther has not yet paid the ransom owed to King Eosa, and by law the king is entitled to one-third of Liam’s rubies.
